12:09:00FromDiscord<zkopt> hello
12:09:06FromDiscord<zkopt> I'm matrix user and
12:09:44FromDiscord<zkopt> I use discord before but move to matrix
12:10:02FromDiscord<zkopt> is there any science/security and nimomy channel in matrix?
12:11:47FromDiscord<[Next-System] systemblue> I guess not↵but I don't know how to access other channel in matrix https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/371759389889003532/1543231691449966623/Screenshot_from_2026-08-29_21-11-02.png?ex=6a941e03&is=6a92cc83&hm=5b219a9163f8618f6a89169d92afbcda3866797847dcd038602556c17f54b2f1&

12:39:54FromDiscord<zkopt> hey nim's tooling channel bridge was broken↵↵moderator should fix it
12:40:01FromDiscord<zkopt> off-topic was broken too
12:41:04FromDiscord<zkopt> and security channel was broken too

12:42:56FromDiscord<pmunch> I'm not sure if the security channel was even bridged. So that would have to be set up from scratch. The tooling bridge should be easy enough to bring back up

12:48:58FromDiscord<pmunch> The bot was cooperative today, so I've bridged the tooling room

16:20:10FromDiscord<pmunch> Have you checked the docs?
16:20:33FromDiscord<pmunch> Found something ridiculous, so I'm building a fairly large project, using Gtk and everything
16:20:41FromDiscord<pmunch> So I expect it to built kinda slowly
16:20:57FromDiscord<pmunch> But Nimble was being a bit ridiculous, taking about 50 seconds to build
16:21:21FromDiscord<pmunch> And it takes about ~45 before I get any output
16:21:35FromDiscord<pmunch> So I ran it with `--debug` to get the Nim command
16:21:50FromDiscord<pmunch> Nim spends 5 seconds building my project..
16:22:11FromDiscord<pmunch> So Nimble is adding 45 seconds of overhead
16:22:49FromDiscord<pmunch> Doing things like this `Executing git ls-remote https://github.com/PMunch/nimbleutils` about 50 times in a row
16:22:59FromDiscord<nasuray> In reply to @pmunch "Nim spends 5 seconds": Maybe worth switching to a `nimble setup` based workflow to not let nimble do all the ish it thinks it needs to do
16:23:40FromDiscord<nasuray> Obvi nimble shouldn't be doing that more than once (if that) but at least to make it less painful in the meantime
16:24:05FromDiscord<pmunch> I''m seriously considering to just stop using Nimble altogether
16:24:08FromDiscord<pmunch> It's become a slow and buggy mess
16:24:26FromDiscord<pmunch> Or fork off old Nimble and start my own package manager
16:24:46FromDiscord<nasuray> In reply to @pmunch "I''m seriously considering to": I genuinely think I experience so much less frustration than others because I don't touch `nimble build`
16:25:01FromDiscord<pmunch> It used to work so well though
16:25:36FromDiscord<pmunch> A quick check to see if you had all the required packages, then grab the correct versions and run a Nim command
16:28:13*Skippy8 joined #nim
16:31:37FromDiscord<muddmaker> Nimble also makes it so that Nim doesn't build on illumos. I can get the Nim compiler but not Nimble
16:37:35FromDiscord<nasuray> In reply to @muddmaker "Nimble also makes it": Huh? How so?
16:41:22FromDiscord<muddmaker> Nimble depends on Chronos which has not been ported
16:43:47FromDiscord<pmunch> Maybe I can get an AI to do my Nimble fork for me 🤔
16:44:03FromDiscord<muddmaker> It's not impossible to do it, it just hasn't happened. It's mostly adding OS definitions, and then either building against illumos' epoll or writing a new event loop with event ports
16:44:15FromDiscord<muddmaker> (edit) "It's not impossible to do it, it just hasn't happened. It's mostly adding OS definitions, and then either building against illumos' epoll ... or" added "emulation"
16:44:37FromDiscord<pmunch> Or I guess I could just use one of the existing package managers that (hopefully) don't suck
16:45:00FromDiscord<muddmaker> >package managers↵>don't suck↵↵I don't know if this combo exists anywhere
16:46:25FromDiscord<pmunch> For Nim or in general? 😅
16:46:35FromDiscord<muddmaker> In general
16:46:52FromDiscord<pmunch> Pacman seems to work well enough on Arch at least
16:48:24FromDiscord<nasuray> package management is hard for sure
16:49:16FromDiscord<muddmaker> I think part of the problem with package managers is that they take package versioning too seriously and actual ABIs not seriously enough. It would be neat if the package manager could track the exact symbols exported by any library and also the exact symbols used by any dependency and track for alignment
16:50:06FromDiscord<muddmaker> It gets super dicey though once you use a language that has meta programming, in which case the ABI used by the program and the code that the package actually depends on don't necessarily align
16:51:09FromDiscord<muddmaker> But it should be trivial for the package manager to allow library alternatives like this, where the package just needs these symbols, and any library that exports those symbols can be swapped in
16:52:10FromDiscord<muddmaker> It would make dependency hell a lot easier if the package doesn't need to specify a _version_ but just a specific ABI contract, which the package manager should be able to help generate
16:54:47FromDiscord<muddmaker> Tracking specific versions is still important for deterministic builds, but this idea would be for enabling package upgradability

19:05:54FromDiscord<anuke> Does it do locking? I was under the impression that it didn't, and that has been a significant issue with nimble (declare dep, dep updates at some point, project breaks)
19:45:28FromDiscord<tauruuuuuus> atlas ftw
19:45:43FromDiscord<nasuray> In reply to @anuke "Does it do locking?": Atlas lock files work slightly different. It's more akin to a snapshot but it does have lock files
19:46:04FromDiscord<nasuray> `atlas lock` and `atlas rep` IIRC
19:46:24FromDiscord<nasuray> In reply to @anuke "Does it do locking?": Do you have an issue with nimble lock files?
20:23:34FromDiscord<anuke> No, I just can't use a newer version of nimble/Nim because the newest compiler version is 2.5x slower as compared to 2.0.x, and iirc that version doesn't have lock files
20:23:54FromDiscord<anuke> (2.5x slower for my polymorph project, which has heavy macro usage, anyway)
20:24:27FromDiscord<anuke> it also has some bugs that break compilation on top of that
20:39:25FromDiscord<nasuray> Nimble 0.24.1 should work fine with any version of Nim >=2
20:40:03FromDiscord<nasuray> (edit) "Nimble 0.24.1 should work fine with any version of Nim >=2 ... " added "(though you might need to grab a pre-compiled binary)"
